GREELY, Edwin Seneca, banker; b. Nashua, N. H., May 20, 1832; s. Seneca and Priscilla (Fields) Greeley; settled in New Haven, Conn., 1855; learned machinist's trade and locomotive building; m. Elizabeth, d. Daniel Corey, of Taunton, Mass., Feb. 20, 1856. First lt. 10th Conn. inf., October 22, 1861; capt., Apr. 25, 1862; maj., Mar. 4, 1863; lt.-col., Sept. 7, 1864; col., Feb. 16, 1865; bvtd. brig-gen. vols., Mar. 13, 1865, for gallant and meritorious services during the war. Mem. L. G. Tillotson & Co., elec. & ry. supplies, 1865-85, which became E. S. Greeley & Co., until discontinued, 1897; was pres. Yale Nat. Bank of New Haven; retired 1905. Pres.-gen. Nat. Soc. S. A. R., 1903; mem. Loyal Legion, G. A. R. Pres. Grace Hosp. Soc. of New Haven; trustee Norwich State Hosp. for the insane. Mem. many religious, humane, charitable, fraternal and mil. orgns.
