FACTORIES CLOSE FOR THE FOURTH, Many Will Cut Short the Vacation Owing to Being Behind With Orders. WORKMEN DEPARTING List of the Big Ones that Are Not in Operation Today — Repairs Will be Made in Many Places and Then Operations will be Resumed Immediately — All Give Up for Today.
The employees of both the Palmer Iron mills and the Hemingray Glass works are enjoying the Fourth today as this is the first day of their vacation. The Hemingray works with its large force of workmen closed yesterday evening and at eight o'clock last night the Palmer mills closed. The Hemingray factory will remain closed one month and in the meantime repairs and improvements will be made. The Palmer mills will be closed for two weeks and in that time improvements and repairs will be made. It is probable that both industries will resume work before the expiration of the time and especially the Palmer mills, as they are at the present time behind in their orders. The employees of both factories received their pay Thursday night and today they are celebrating. Many of the workmen of the Hemingray factory will depart for Pittsburg and Philadelphia tonight and a large crowd will leave Saturday morning where they will spend their vacation visiting their friends in the east. Most of the employees of the Palmer mills will remain in Muncie or near the city during the time so that in case the mill resumes sooner than is expected they will be on hand. The Indiana, Grasshopper, and Midland mills which closed last Saturday were marked by most of the workmen leaving the city to spend their vacations. Most of the employees took advantage of the glassworkers' rates to Pittsburg and Philadelphia and other eastern points and will return about the latter part of next week to be on hand when the mills resume work. Several industries of the city are closed for the Fourth: Among them are: Indiana Bridge works, Muncie Pulp Company, and Ball Brothers' glass works. However, there are some departments of these mills in operation today. Most of the minor industries are closed, but will resume operations in the morning. |
