Destructive Fire. The large frame building at Greenup and Powell streets, known as the Champion Glass works building, was destroyed by fire last Tuesday morning. For some years past the building has been occupied by Dr. E. R. W. Thomas as a tobacco warehouse; and, at the time of the fire, there were in it 360 hogsheads of old tobacco, and 200 of new, nearly all of which were destroyed. The loss on building and contents is estimated $85,000. The tobacco was insured as follows: Royal, of Liverpool ...................... $5,000 Imperial, of London ..................... 10,000 Franklin, of Philadelphia ................. 5,000 Clay, of Newport .......................... 5,000 Enterprise, of Cincinnati ............... 10,000 Commercial, of Cincinnati ............. 5,000 Union ........................................... 5,000 National ....................................... 5,000 Queen .......................................... 5,000 _______ Total .......................................... $55,000 There is no doubt that the fire was the work of an incendiary. There was no fire about the building, and it was detached from all others. The three most destructive fires that have occurred in Covington since the Holly water works went into operation, originated in tobacco houses. |
