But the City Council Met Last Night Just

the Same.

 

Every member of the city council was present last night when the meeting was called to order by Mr. Gray who officiated at the Mayor's desk. After the reading of the journal a remonstrance for stopping the proposed improvements in various alleys, signed by a number of residents was presented. The street and alley committee will investigate.

A petition for the construction of a sidewalk on the west side of Madison street, between Main and Washington streets was granted.

Communications from Drs. Boyden and W.H. Egbert were to the effect that they were candidates for the position of city health officer. The communications were placed on file. Later the same subject was brought up and the council concluded not to make any change until next March when the new council would have charge.

The question as to whether or not it was policy to purchase more than 1000 fee of new fire hose caused a lengthy discussion and the city decided to purchase the 1,000 feet asked for by Chief Shepp.

The street and alley committee reported that the portion of Seventh street between Madison and Monroe should be improved. The report was concurred in.

The report of the superintendent of the electric light station was submitted and placed on file. The report made the fact manifest that improvements over the various lines were necessary.

The city commissioners in reference to the report of the opening of Vine street from Second to Willard referred to the street and alley committee with instructions for them to bring a resolution to abandon the opening of the street.

A petition signed by Harriett W. Kitts and Rose B. Stewart, representatives of the Federated Club of Clubs asked that the city council set aside 2 mills on every dollar of taxable property for the maintenance of the public library. The petition was placed on file. The following bills were allowed and the session come to a close.
