Mary Cross' Fast and Fallacy.

Mary Cross, the colored woman who is in jail for shooting at Mr. Robert Hemingray, has fasted now for 24 days. She has taken nothing in that time but water. The first four or five days, according to her account, she suffered from hunger, but since that time she has had no disagreeable feeling, except at times a burning thirst. She treats rather rudely any one that urges her to take nourishment, and is especially severe in her talk of Mr. Hemingray and his family, and Mr. Pat Bolan and Frank Myers, the turnkey of the jail. She says that she intends to visit them after her death and do them all the damage she can. She is evidently crazy, and from her dogged determination so far, will starve herself to death. Already she is much emaciated and looks like a veritable witch, and has fallen off in weight about forty pounds. She only takes interest in the visits of her two daughters, and will not talk, without going into a passion, with any one else. Her nephew visited her yesterday, but his visit did not seem to please her at all and she refused many kind offers he made.
