From the City of Churches. Brooklyn, N.Y., May 11. -At the last regular meeting of the Branch No. 52 Casper J. Hartman was duly elected to represent the Branch as delegate to the annual convention which is to be held in Columbus O. This occasion was very interesting, as well as a surprise, to Matthew Johnson, who had just returned from a pleasant trip to Jacksonville, Fla., where he was busy looking out for his interests with his brother-in-law, Geo. Van Gasbeck, who retired from the trade quite a number of years ago. The members of Branch No. 52, who hold Johnson with high esteem, presented him with a fine gold-headed cane. Adam Huether made the presentation speech, which was very brief. The recipient of the token invited the members down to the main hall, where there was a surprise in store for all, such as refreshments and all good things that go with it. It is with deep regret that the writer records the sudden demise of Phillip Schmidt's baby daughter, who was taken away at the tender age of two and a half years. The brother has the sympathy of all our members in the hour of his bereavement. Edward Hughes, who has been very ill the past three months, and who had to undergo two severe operations, is rapidly recuperating and will likely be back at work at a very early date. -Gotham. |
