SAN FRANCISCO.
It is reported from San Francisco that the twenty-six expert glass blowers recruited at Wheeling, W. Va., Pittsburgh, Pa., and Bellaire, O., for the San Francisco and Pacific Glass Works, have arrived from the East, and Carlton Newman, the president of the company, declares that the manufacture of the finest glass will soon be under way. The factory will start operations in a few days on flint glass work, including lamp chimneys and globes, jelly glasses, lanterns, chemical ware, plates, glasses and pitchers. The Journal of Commerce says: "White sand has been imported from Belgium, chemicals from Paris, and coal from Australia, and there is assurance that the glassware produced here will be equal to the best in the markets of the world. The sand from Monterey is said to be very useful in the manufacture of bottles and will be utilized extensively in that line. Mr. Newman commissioned the superintendent of the works to visit the places on the Ohio river mentioned, and engage the best artisans in various departments of the country. There is no reason why we should be importers of any of the immense quantity of glass yearly used on this coast. There is an abundance of the material necessary for the manufacture, and all that was needed was capital and skilled labor, both of which are already in hand. Much credit is due to Mr. Newman for his enterprise in embarking in a new and hitherto untrodden field of industry." |
