GLASS WORKS.

Inauguration of an Extensive

Manufacturing Enterprise in This City.

The Denver Art and Plate Glass Company

Let a Contract for Their Plant.

Golden Also Proposes to Have a Plant

for the Manufacture of Glass.

"These are the styles of glassware which we propose to manufacture," said Mr. S. D. Hayward to a NEWS reporter last evening, as he ushered him into a cozy parlor and pointed to a table in the corner of the room. No fancy art table of any queensware store was ever laden with finer or rarer specimens of glassware than those which filled this one in Mr. Hayward's parlor. They comprised specimens of white commercial ware, as well as every variety of colored ware, in delicate and artistic designs, from a wine glass to a flower vase, it is known as "Vasimania ware," the manufacture of which has been brought to such a high state of perfection in France, and which is so highly regarded by ladies who appreciate their beauty and prisze them as valuable additions to their china closets.

A COMPANY ORGANIZED

After an examination of these specimens, which Mr. Hayward obtained in Milwaukee, where they were manufactured, the following facts in regard to the proposed works were obtained.

The name of the company will be the Denver Art and Plate Glass company. Its articles of incorporation have not yet been filed, but will be in a few days. The capital stock will be $100,000. The works will be located on the Denver and South Park road, just south of the city, near Valverde, and close to the Chemical works. Twenty-three lots have been secured, and the building site was staked off yesterday. Mr. Hayward states that the site was chosen partially on account of the inducements offered by the South Park company, which has promised in every way to facilitate the proposed enterprise. The building, for which the the contract been let. will be 50 by 150, with an engine room 18 by 28 attached. It will be one story, and constructed of brick, with an iron roof. It will be completed as rapidly as possible, the works may be in full operation by spring.

WHAT IT WILL MANUFACTURE.

The work of manufacturing the glass will be in charge of Prof. De Voy who is an experienced French artist, in his line, and is in possession of the secret by which 4,000 colors or shades are used and combined in its manufacture. Four skilled and experienced workmen from France will assist him, and in addition the works will employ upwards of forty men, boys and girls. They will produce everything from the cheapest to the best glassware — from a lamp chimney to a highly ornamented vase fit for the richest parlor in the land. With such a range of manufacture their trade will cover a wide extent of western country. There are sold in this city over two car loads of liquor flasks or bottles per month, which are now brought from the East, but which can be produced here better and more cheaply. The Manitou bottling company will take 200,000 bottles next year, while the trade in every style, detail, or grade of glass can be supplied in a superior quality and at less price than they can be imported.

COLORADO MATERIALS.

The materials are here for the use of the works. Mr. Hayward exhibited Colorado silica 98 1/2 per cent pure, which ran be obtained here in large quantities. The specimens shown by Mr. Hayward are made of silica only 65 per cent pure, of which he has also a sample. The difference in the two samples of silica is perceptible at a glance. Of Colorado fire clay it is not necessary to speak, while the Chemical works produce an abundance of soda ash, which is ready for delivery just at the door of the glass works.

When these works are in successful operation, the manufacture of plate glass, which requires something of a different plant, will be added. From Colorado silica, says Mr. Hayward, can be made the firmest and finest plate glass in the world.

Comment on the importance of Mr. Hayward's enterprise is unnecessary. Its success may be confidently predicted, while our city is to be congratulated on the fact that the manufacture of glass is to be added to her list of industries.
