Suicide.

Promised at
the Inquest.
The suicide of Mrs. Carlotta Hamingray [sic] Hemingray at the Knickerbocker Hotel, 1340 Pine street, on last Saturday evening, threatens to develop some startling and sensational incidents entirely remote from the tragedy that was the talk of the city yesterday. Now comes the theory that the woman was goaded to her death by the two men, Robert Hamingray [sic] Hemingray and his brother. This theory is backed up by several people in the house. Mr. Locke of the Knickerbocker called at the coroner's office this morning and said that Mrs. C. T. Hamingray [sic] Hemingray told Mrs. Locke that for some time past the two men had been making life miserable for the dead woman and that they did everything possible to suggest suicide to her, without coming out directly and telling her to end her life. The pistol was left in a conspicuous place by Robert Hamingray [sic] Hemingray, and references were made every now and then to death by a pistol shot. The men, so the story runs, were satisfied that the woman would commit suicide on last Saturday night, and upon their return tiptoed into the room where they found the corpse of the woman. Then they tiptoed out again and went to Mr. Locke, telling him that they had just heard a pistol shot in the suite occupied by the dead woman and her husband.
Dr. Leland will summon the physician who was called to see if anything could be done to aid the woman when she was first found by Mr. Locke. His object, it is said, will be to see whether Mrs. Hamingray [sic] Hemingray had been dead but a few minutes or was already passing into a state of rigor mortis when the physician reached her side.
A telegraphic dispatch reached this city this morning stating that the woman who passes as the wife of C. T. Hamingway [sic] Hemingray is not his wife at all but in reality is Mrs. Rose Surprise, the wife of Cornelius Surprise, a well known and influential citizen of Cincinnati, Ohio. The Surprises were not happy as man and wife, and some time ago the wife disappeared suddenly. The husband made no effort to locate her, and until the suicide did not know of her whereabouts.
