MOTHER SUSPECTS
SOME FOUL PLAY
Mrs. Campiglio Does Not Believe Her
Daughter Fired the Shot.
CINCINNATI. December 1. The real name of the girl who committed suicide in San Francisco Saturday night under the name of Mrs. Hemingray, was Charlotte Steffin, and her father is a prominent New York grocer.
Charlotte or Carlo Campiglio, as she was popularly known in this city, was the daughter of Mrs. P. F. Del-Campiglio by her first marriage to a Mr. Steffin of New York. Mrs. Campiglio subsequently obtained a divorce from Mr. Steffin and married Mr. P. F. Del-Campiglio. Over her daughter’s pathetic death Mrs. Campiglio is heartbroken. She has suffered greatly since the news was told her.
"I cannot believe that Carlo killed herself," said she to-day. "She was always so happy and bright. Some one else must have fired that shot. I can’t believe she is even dead, because I cannot realize that such a thing as this could happen. She and I were just like sisters. Her real name is Steffin, and her father a New York grocer. She wrote me often. In her last she said nothing of cruel treatment by her husband. She only said she was sorry that she left Cincinnati and wished that I was near her. At the time of her marriage she wrote and told me of it, and said that she was going to San Francisco with Mr. Hemingray.
"Her body is to be brought here. I can’t make up my mind to have her cremated, though Mr. Campiglio desires it. My father, William Goodrich, will come to the funeral."
Friends say that Steffin is still living in New York.
