THE GLASS FACTORIES. PITTSBURGH.
Notwithstanding there is little or nothing doing in the tableware line a good feeling exists among manufacturers, who generally anticipate a favorable turn in trade as soon as spring opens. This hopefulness is based on the grounds that money is plentiful, price low, and stocks in dealers' hands small. That the latter is the case is evident from the frequency with which small orders come in, and the urgency which is manifested for immediate shipment. In about two weeks from now buyers will begin to arrive, and by the 1st of February there ought to be a fair trade doing. A good many of the factories have resumed work, and those that have not done so will start in a day or two. In forming an estimate of the spring trade manufacturers take no account of the strike or lockout down the river, as they are unanimously of the belief that the difficulties will be easily accommodated as soon as the prospects of trade justify a resumption. Stocks are of fair size, though not unusually large for the season, and a good many new patterns are being added. Two new furnaces will go into operation this month, and two others which have been idle for some time back will probably start up, so that all the manufacturing facilities here will very likely be in operation by the end of the month. · · |
