· · ANOTHER BARN BURNED.
About 12 o'clock an alarm from box 61 called department No. 2 to the east end of the city. On arriving at the scene the fire was found to be in the barn owned and occupied by the Hemingray glass company and located near their glass factory. The fire was discovered by the night watchman at the factory, who succeeded in letting out a horse belonging to F. M. Hawk, the grocerman, which was stabled in the barn, but not until the animal was badly scorched. The building was in flames when the department arrived and the barn was almost totally destroyed. Loss about $100. Insured. NOTES.
A load of hay standing in the middle of Chestnut street last night proved a dangerous obstruction to the fire department in making the run to the Hemingray fire. The new chemical engine which was received a few days ago would have been of great service last night, but the machine had not been tested yet, nor accepted by the city and could not be taken out. The run by department No. 2 was considerably interfered with. They encountered some ropes across the streets in the smallpox infected district, through which they had to pass, which were put there to mark the quarantine lines. |
