CORNING BUILDING IN SOUTH.

The Corning Glass Works, of Corning, N. Y., according to a press report, has recently acquired abandoned Government property at Kingsport, Tenn., on which that company intends to build a factory to be devoted to the manufacture of "Pyrex" glassware. We understand that the new project will in no way change the policy or growth of the present works of the company in Corning. The decision to operate a factory at Kingsport, it is said, is chiefly due to the desire to be in close proximity to the purchasing markets of the entire South.

In its issue of October 16th the "Herald" of Bristol, Tenn., in part, said:

"Kingsport added another large industry to its growing roll of manufacturing plants today when Mayor J. W. Dobyns spaded up the first shovelful of dirt for the excavations for the factory of the Corning Glass Works, manufacturers of 'Pyrex', the nationally advertised heat-resisting baking and serving dishes.

"The new Kingsport factory, which will be known as the Southern Division of the Corning Glass Works, will be located on the former site of the Edgewood Arsenal and will begin operations with 300 employees next spring. Construction work, which will include the enlargement of two buildings purchased with 30 acres of ground from the government and the erection of two other structures will be conducted as rapidly as labor and materials can be obtained.

"Speeches of welcome to the representatives of Kingsport's latest industry were delivered by J. Fred Johnson, President of the Kingsport Improvement Corporation, and Col. William Roller, one of the oldest residents and perhaps the largest individual property owner of the city. An additional welcome was made in a brief talk by E. M. Gerdler, a representative of the Simmons Hardware Company.

"Responses were made by C. S. Izant, assistant manager; John L. Thomas, assistant treasurer; Joseph H. Lewis, construction engineer, and John Hoy, accountant, all representatives of the Corning Works, whose main factory is at Corning, N. Y.

"Mr. Izant, who spoke briefly, told the audience that his company had chosen Kingsport as a manufacturing location after investigating the possibilities of virtually every city in the country where glass can be manufactured.

"It was announced that the Corning Glass Works will join the other industries of the city in the community building program upon which the city is engaged.

"The New York factory of the company employs 3,000 men, and the force of the Kingsport plant, it is stated, will be increased as rapidly as labor, all of which will be obtained in this section, can be trained.

"The company is now unable to fill all its orders and the Kingsport plant is expected to serve not only the southern states but also much of the middle west. The work of the 'Pyrex' products, already nationally recognized, and the sales for which have been stimulated by much advertising, is expected to result in the rapid enlargement of the Kingsport plant until it becomes one of the largest industries of the city."
