The Glass Works.
The new glass works project at Cadiz seems now to have fair prospects of success. Four gentlemen from Bridgeport and Bellaire came out to Cadiz a few weeks ago, and after talking with a number of our citizens for a day, signed an agreement to build a glass factory at this place, investing in the works at least fifteen thousand dollars, and to operate said works five years, on condition that the citizens of this place would make them a donation of five thousand dollars, the donation not to be made, however, until the works were complete and ready for operation. These four gentlemen, who also used the name of a fifth, requested that their names should not be published until the matter should progress further. One of them was a former citizen of this place, and the others all practical glass workers. The five thousand dollars has now been subscribed in full, and it is expected that the Bridgeport parties will be here next week to arrange for commenting operations. The subscription has been a very general one, nearly every business man in the place assisting in it. One man gave $300, and another man $200, fourteen others $100 each, thirteen $50 each, sixty-seven $25 each, and fifty eight others smaller sums, the total number of contributors being one hundred and fifty-four. It now remains for the Bridgeport parties to make good their side of the contract, and there is no reason to doubt that they will do it. They should be met with encouragement and assistance on the part of our citizens, and everything possible should be done to make the new project a success. At the same time the gentlemen come among us as strangers, and care should be taken at the beginning that a contract shall be carefully drawn and signed that will secure a glass factory whose value will be fully such as has beeu represented to the people who have subscribed this money. Hitherto the matter has been merely an experiment to see whether the money could be raised. Now that it has been raised, care should be taken to secure fully what has been proposed. We are requested to call a meeting of the subscribers for this Thursday, evening, at seven o'clock, at the Court House. |
