BIG PUMPING STATION

Of the Hemingray Glass Company of

This City is Almost Blown to Atoms

at Desoto - Superintendent Bert Lee

and Assistant Fight Way Through

Flames - Cause Unknown.

The town of Desoto northeast of this city, was shaken by a terrific explosion. The scene of the accident was the pumping station of the Hemingray Glass Company of Muncie and two men were seriously and perhaps fatally injured.

The accident occurred at an early hour. There was no one there, with the exception of Supt. Bert Lee, formerly of this city, and his assistant whose name is unknown. Both men are so seriously injured that they are unable to relate anything concerning the affair. Mr. Hemingray went to Desoto at noon. The explosion was that of gas, and the building comprising the pumping station was almost blown to pieces. The men who were on the inside of the building at the time were unable to get out until they recovered from the shock. Then they had to fight their way through the flames.

Their injuries chiefly comprise burns, but they are so extensive that they are considered serious. The loss sustained by the company through the disaster will be quite large, as the station was constructed at an enormous expense. The two unfortunate men were taken from the scene and are being cared for.

LEE REPORTED DEAD.

Late this afternoon it was reported in this city that Bert Lee died of his injuries.
