YESTERDAY Messrs. Hemingray & Co. notified their green-house workers that they had secured other men to do the work. This meant the dismissal of the old force, to whom it came not unexpectedly. To some of the men who spoke to the proprietors the latter replied it was simply a matter of business, that the work had to be done at the reduced rates or not at all. It was generally understood that in the conference of the manufacturers, Messrs. Hemingray & Co. favored strongly giving the men the wages they asked for, and their action of yesterday is considered by the men as having been taken under the decision of the general manufacturer's association. Sixteen regular workmen and their assistants, who number many more, are thus thrown out of employment. Those who take their places are a band of ten or eleven who came here from Germany two years ago. They are now at La Salle, Ill., at work in the factory there. It is said by the workmen here that they are to work for twenty-five per cent, off the rates of last year. They are expected to arrive here by Monday next.
