Plant Expansion to Keep Work Force Here Stable
The Owens-Illinois plant here is one of two owned by the company where a multi-million-dollar expansion program is underway, according to the Toledo, Ohio, office. Conversion to television bulb production of an existing glass melting furnace in the plant at Muncie is scheduled to be completed by next summer. When the conversion is complete at the Muncie plant, production here will be devoted entirely to television bulbs, W. B. Achenbach, vice president, said. THE COMPANY also plans a new glass melting furnace to be put in operation at the Columbus, Ohio, plant. The expansion of the Muncie and Columbus plants will make eight furnaces Owens-Illinois has for the melting of glass for the production of color and black and white picture tube bulbs. E. L. Ross, manager of the Muncie plant, said, "The change-over to television bulb production will help keep the Muncie plant's total employment at the present level of 600. Muncie plant owners are happy to play a part in the growth of the U. S. television industry." |
