"Gateau" means cake and a very novel "Gateau" party or reception was given yesterday afternoon by Mrs. Ross James Beatty and Mrs. J. Rollin Marsh, at the lovely home of the first named hostess on East Jackson street. The interior of the residence was a veritable dream of beauty; the floral decorations of roses and chrysanthemums and smilax, harmonizing and blending with the rich colors of the furnishings. Mrs. Marsh and Mrs. Beatty received the guests assisted by Mrs. Clifford Ryan and Mrs. D. F. Mustard of Anderson.

In one room was monster cake and Mrs. Marsh announced to the guests that the one guessing the amount of ingredients used in preparing the cake would be presented with it. Mrs. Marsh then distributed hand painted sheets of linen paper on which appeared a tiny cherub holding aloft a cake, and beneath the names of the ingredients contained in the cake. The souvenirs, for such they were, were painted by Mrs. Marsh. The guessing contest caused quite a bit of merriment and Mrs. L. A. Franklin and Mrs. E. S. L. Thompson shared honors. Mrs. Thompson composed a bit of poetry embracing her guess as follows:

"2 lbs of sugar, 3 lbs of flour, 1 lb of eggs, well beaten one hour, One half a pound of cocoanut, 1 lb of milk, night slightly sour, with baking powder spoonfuls six, And don't forget to sift and mix, with the flour.

P. S. Vanilla essence from the bean, the pure extract is hardly seen."

Dainty refreshments were served in the dining room under the direction of Miss Edna Streeter. The guests were:

Mesdames Jas Sprankle, T. H. Neely, Cyrus Neely, E. S. L. Thompson, George Ball, Tomlinson, Jas. Streeter, Lois Love McDowell, Velney Gilbert, Henry Marsh, Homer Highlands, Harry Wysor, S. C.
