SIX GLASS CONCERNS

EMPLOY 2,240 HANDS

Statistical Report of the Trade in

Muncie.

From statements made direct by the companies, it was learned Friday that, when next season's fires are in full blast there will be 2,240 employes in all on the pay rolls at Muncie's six glass factories, of this number 1,315 will be skilled. This is the dull season of the year, it being the custom of the glass trade to shut down during the warmest weather. Resumption in most of the factories will take place on September 1. At a few, the time for starting work has not been fixed, but will be determined within a week or two.

Ball Brothers' fruit jar plant in Industry consists of two large factories. The firm employes 1,200 hands, about equally divided in skilled and unskilled classes. The date of resumption has not fixed for the reason that the wage scale has not been adjusted. The green glass workers will send a committee to Muncie within a week or ten days to confer with the firm relative to making a scale on the blowing machines used in the factories. The company manufactures more than half of the fruit jars made in the United States, the plant being by far the largest of its kind in this country.

The Port Glass works in Westside, another fruit jar concern, gives employment to 35 skilled workmen and to 50 unskilled. For the same reason that the wage scale has not been adjusted the company is not certain of the date of resumption.

WINDOW GLASS MEN.

One hundred and fifty skilled men and seventy-five unskilled laborers are on the pay roll, or will be, when the next fire at factory No. 11 of the American Window Glass ompany [sic] company, in Boycetown starts on September 1. The plant was formerly owned by Maring-Hart & Co., and is still better known under that name, Overs factory in industry will employ 180 men, of whom 130 will be skilled. This is factory No. 10 of the trust, and will also begin operations on September 1.

The Boldt or Muncie Glass works which has been idle for the summer along with other bottle plants all over the country, will resume on September 1 for the ensuing season. The company is one of the most industrious and prosperous in the United States. Next fire 300 men and employes will constitute the force at the two factories. All will be skilled except about fifty. Mr. Boldt, the leading stockholder of the firm, spends much of his time in Cincinnati, where the company has erected another large factory.

The Hemingray Glass company's factory is in Industry and has been in part operation during the summer. A full force of about 250 employes will be put to work on or near September 1. On an average about 100 of the men are unskilled.
