SWALLOWED LAUDANUM One Ounce of Dangerous Drug Taken By Andrew Wilcoxon. In a Despondent Mood He Attempted Suicide -- Life Saved by Continuous Walking -- Brooded Over Business Transactions.
In a fit of despondency Andrew Wilcoxon, a saloonist, residing in East Eighth street, attempted suicide at 6 o'clock Tuesday evening, by swallowing almost an ounce of laudanum. He was formerly a glassworker, employed in the Hemingray glass factory. He is better known as "Easter." A business transaction over which Wilcoxon brooded is assigned as the cause of the despondency. He was last week placed in charge of a saloon in West Ninth street by the Schlitz Brewing Company, which was formerly owned by Pat Hefferman. The latter it seems did not take kindly to the transaction and accosted Wilcoxon with bitter admonitions. The men who had formerly been close friends were estranged, although it is said a reconciliation later took place. A few minutes before Wilcoxon swallowed the laudanum he was on duty at the saloon. He immediately went to his home where his wife noticing his illness, summoned Dr. Cecil who hastily repaired to the scene. A stomach pump was used but this proved insufficient. As an only means of saving his life Wilcoxon was walked up and down the streets for several hours. Dr. Cecil considers it miraculous that the man's life was saved. |
