YOUTHFUL STRIKER

FELL UNDER WHEELS

Gomer Young's Legs Severed

Near Hips.

Tried To Dodge Stream of

Hose Turned On Him.

Gomer, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Young, living at the corner of Seventh and Grant streets, was probably fatally injured at about 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, on the Muncie Belt switch of the Hemingray glass works. He was run over by cars hauled by Muncie Belt engine No. 1, of which Tom Jones is the engineer, and Mr. Hudson the fireman.

Young, with other boys at the Hemingray plant, has been on strike for two days, and during this period it was stated Tuesday evening, the lads have been wandering about the factory and tracks, greatly hindering the railroad men in their work. Young and several other boys had been jumping upon the engine, and were warned to stay off, it is said. Finally, when Young got on the engine again, thinking to frighten him off, as was stated by Young immediately after the accident, the fireman turned the hose upon him.

The boy was at the time on the foot board back of the tender. He endeavored to avoid the water and to jump from the engine.

In doing so his coat caught on the hand rail, and he was thrown to the track. Three cars and one truck of another passed over him. Both legs were severed from the body, a few inches below the hips, as cleanly as if done with a meat ax.

Potter & Moffitt's ambulance was called, and the boy taken to the hospital, where he is momentarily expected to die. Immediately after and for several hours after the accident, he was perfectly conscious and conversed with relatives who were at his side.

It is said by people living in the part of the city near the scene of the accident, that the severed legs were picked up by section men and buried only a few inches under the ground near the track.
