MIDLAND STEEL MEN OUT

When the day shift lays aside the blow pipe in the Boldt, Ball Brothers and Hemingray glass factories, Saturday, work will not be resumed again until next fall.

The men will welcome the change from the hot atmosphere of the glass house to the outdoor life. The heat during the past two weeks has been albost [sic] almost unbearable and several workmen are sick. Camps along the banks of the rivers and lakes have been picked out and immediately a large number of the men will leave for these resorts of the men will leave for these resorts to spend many weeks. A large number will visit with former friends in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and other states. Among the employes of the factories with families, Detroit will be a great attraction. Quite a number will visit this city next week. After this the Buffalo exposition will be visited.

The season has been one of the most prosperous for the workmen and manufacturers ever experienced in the glass trade, with the exception of the operators of the prescription houses. Prospects are brighter for the coming fire in this branch of trade, owing to the agreement entered into a few days ago, at the meeting held in Indianapolis.

There is no trouble anticipated in the settlement of the wage scale in the flint glass trade. While no decisive action is expected before the latter part of August it is understood that an understanding has virtually been reached between the companies and the union with the exception of the question of apprentices and a few minor matters.

The wage conference of the greens will be held in this city on Monday next. While considerable importance is attached to this meeting by reason of the fact that some thing of the demands from both sides will be presented, it is not expected that decisive action will be taken. Taken all in all, the prospects for a prosperous fire next season was never better.
