About 2 o'clock this afternoon, Mary Cross, a tall mulatto woman, made an unsuccessful attempt to shoot Mr. Robert Hemingray, at his residence, on Garrard street. She fired five shoots, none of which took effect. Not long since this woman, who worked for Mr. Hemingray's family, was arrested on the charge of disorderly conduct and upon suspicion of having stolen some diamonds. She was convicted on the first charge, and served a term in the city jail. She had vowed vengeance, and probably took this method to accomplish her purpose.
