She Preferred Death.

San Francisco — Carlotta Hemingray, the girl wife of a well-known turfman, committed a spectacular suicide at the Hotel Knickerbocker on Pine street Saturday night. The young wife had been temporarily estranged from her husband, Robert Hemingray, and had, according to the letters which she left, abandoned all hope of a reconciliation. She had been accused by him of "gossiping" and, fearing that no explanation from her would restore her to good grace, sent a bullet through her brain, dying instantly.
