The yearly factory closing for the summer vacation period is at hand and on Saturday hundreds of toilers in many of the city's big industries will go in flocks to the realms of recreation. For weeks the factory men have been longing for the eventful day of the commencement of their rest period, and with finishing work on their various shifts tomorrow will begin their siege of rejoicing.

A notable feature of the closing of the mills this summer is the fact that in many cases the employees will not be given such an extended vacation as they are accustomed to, owing to the rush of business. Strange as it may seem, Muncie factories generally are prospering unusually well for the time of year, and instead of business decreasing there has been a surprising increase and a long shut-down of some of the institutions has not been deemed advisable.

Most of the workingmen have planned trips, especially the glass workers, who will follow their usual custom of taking a prolonged fishing and camping trip. Many employees of the factories will be retained by the companies to work on improvements and repairs which will be made in most of the industries.

FORTUNES IN PAYROLLS.

The paymasters at the plants will be caused much overwork because of the closing, and more than one fortune in payrolls will be handed out to employees from their employers. In many cases the workmen have held back much of their pay for the past few months in order to have a sufficient amount of cash to carry them through the rest period. However, in some instances the vacation will be so short that they will not be away from work for any great while.

The Ball Brothers' Glass Manufacturing company's immense plant will close Saturday at midnight, remaining idle until August 1. During the shut-down a large force of workmen will be engaged in making summer repairs and improvements, the company having decided to expend a large amount of money for the same.

Owing the present heavy volume of business the Hemingray glass factory will be closed for only three weeks, and one furnace will be kept in operation during this time.

The Charles Boldt Glass company's plant in west Second street will close Saturday night and will resume September 4. It is understood that during the shut-down the company will make many improvements.
