MR. BROOKFIELD WILL NOT RESIGN.

Makes Emphatic Denial of Story that He is Weary and Wants Rest.

The politicians, both Republican and Democratic, were very much surprised yesterday morning when they read in a morning paper that William Brookfield, Chairman of the Republican State and County Committees was going to resign both offices because he was heartily tired of the factional strife in the Republican Party and wanted to get out of politics. Mr. Brookfield said when asked about this matter:

"I was just as much surprised as any one when I read the story. I am not at a loss to know where it comes from, and I want to say just this: The story is untrue, I have authorized nobody to state for me that I would resign either the Chairmanship of the State Committee or the Presidency of the County Committee. I have not resigned. I have no reason for resigning. I do not intend to resign, and no matter how many stories are printed saying I am to resign, I say in conclusion that I shall not resign."

Mr. Brookfield then said: "My term of office as Chairman of the State Committee will end at the sitting of the next State Convention, and I may be retired in spite of all my desires to the contrary. That is several months off yet, and many things may happen between now and then."
