Dennis Collins Shoots "Corky" Harris Twice

After Being Knocked Down and

Then Escapes.

Yesterday morning between two and three o'clock there came near being a murder in James Cavanaugh's gambling rooms over Bennie Hope's saloon on the south side of the public square. At least ten men were present. The "pastime" was a game of craps. Mont Harris, familiarly called "Corky" was the gamekeeper. Dennis Collins, a glass-worker, employed at Hemingray's, was one of the players. He lost two twenty-five cent pieces in succession and accused Harris of furnishing "loaded" dice. Harris resented this, so it seems, and after a few hot words were exchanged, knocked Collins down. The player drew a revolver and fired three shots in rapid succession and there was a very sudden dispersement of the crowd. Harris afterwards said he never ran so fast before but he took along two bullets from Collins' gun. One lodged in his left arm above the elbow and the other in the fleshy part of his left thigh. The third bullet penetrated "Corky's" hat, showing what a close call he had. He was assisted to his room in the building and loan block, corner of Adams and High streets, where Drs Kemper attended him. They removed the bullet in the arm but could not locate the one in the thigh. As it will hardly cause trouble, it will doubtless be left there. Harris is resting very comfortably to-day and is expected to be able to be out shortly. Collins has doubtless fled the city for the police have failed to locate him after a vigorous search. To-day the police served warrants against Cavanaugh and four players charging them with gambling. The prisoners arranged to settle for the usual fines. It is understood that Chief Cashmore has arranged to secure a better observance of the law than has been given during the past several months.
