A Boom in Beer Bottle Orders.
BROOKLYN, N.Y., April 14. — We are just recovering from a terrible shock which this city received when Governor Morton signed the Baines bill, which disposes of free lunches and closes the saloons on Sundays, which is quite effective, indeed. Previous to the passage of the bill we had asked some of our glass manufacturers how they liked it and what their opinion of the bill was. Some said it was disastrous, and that the framers of such an obnoxious ought to be shot, etc., but after the bill was signed by the governor they began to think it was a pretty good thing, as the orders for beer bottles came in so fast they could not handle them. Every bottle works is booming here, having more orders then they can fill in a year; in fact, men come begging for beer bottles in order to meet the Sunday trade, and this trade must be looked after, and previous to Saturday night at 12 o'clock. The Bushwick Glass Works (Brookfield's) is extremely busy, having very large orders for beer bottles during the boom, and are about starting another furnace. · · |
