Fire at the Covington Glass-Works.
About two o'clock yesterday afternoon a fire broke out in the second story of the packing-house of the Covington Glass-works, a large wooden building situated at the north-west corner of Second and Madison streets. How it originated is not known, as fire is never used in that story. There being a large amount of straw and other combustible material in the building the flames spread with wonderful rapidity, and in a few minutes the whole upper part of the structure was in a blaze. An alarm was sent in from box 18 and the firemen, both regulars and volunteers, turned out with their usual promptitude, reaching the scene of conflagration in good time and doing most excellent service after they arrived. Five heavy streams were soon playing upon the burning building, but the upper story was well-nigh destroyed before a drop of water fell upon it. The lower story was partially saved, and nearly all the glass-ware stored on that floor was gotten out. By the careful management of the firemen about $2,000 worth of glass jars, etc., stored in the second story were also saved. Messers. Hemingray & Co., proprietors of the glass-works, were very much surprised that any portion of the building was saved from destruction, considering the headway the flames had gained, and of course were pleased with the efficiency of our Fire Department. The loss of the firm on building and stock will amount to about $5,000, which is fully covered by insurance in the Kenton, of Covington; Clay of Newport, and a Buffalo company. About $2,000 of the amount was in the Kenton. |
