The San Joaquin Electric Company's power transmission line to Hanford was completed yesterday. The power line will not be in operation for two or three weeks as the motors and step-down transformers will not be set up in Hanford and Selma before that time. The delay is caused by the Electric Supply Company being rushed with orders for such machines and unable to send the motors at an earlier date.

The San Joaquin Electric Company now has the longest transmission line in the United States. From the power house in the mountains to Hanford is a distance of sixty eight miles. There will be a direct current via Fresno and Selma to Hanford. The electricity will be sent over the wires at a high pressure, leaving the powerhouse with a current of 19,500 volts, and arriving at its destination sixty eight miles away with but a small percentage of loss. Only a short while ago it was discovered that electricity could be transmitted at a high voltage and the great loss of power under the old method avoided. This makes long distance transmission practicable.

The electricity passes through what is called a step up machine at the power house and this sends it on to the line at a higher voltage. Then upon its arrival at the sub station the fluid or "juice" is received by step down machines, which lower the voltage so that it can be utilized for commercial purposes.

Electricians throughout the United States are interested in the Fresno plant as the latest methods in handling electricity are in operation there. Several descriptive articles for electrical journals are being prepared in regard to the Fresno and Hanford long distance line.
