SIX OVERCOME BY GAS. Peril of men in a pit Discovered by a Watchman — One in Serious Condition.
Half a dozen men who were at work late on Saturday night in a pit inside the Bushwick Glass Works, at Grand Street and Morgan Avenue, Williamsburg, were overcome by illuminating gas which had escaped from a leaky pipe. The odor of the gas attracted the attention of the night watchman, and upon an investigation he discovered the plight of the men and summoned help. Three of them, John Hutscher, thirty-three years old, of 306 Maujer Street; Henry Brown, and John Simpson, were the most seriously affected. Pending the arrival of Dr. Hart with an ambulance from St. Catharine's Hospital the employes [sic] employees resorted to artificial respiration to keep the men alive. Brown and Simpson were resuscitated, but Dr. Hart was obliged to work over Hutscher for three hours before he was revived. He was then in such bad condition that Dr. Hart desired to take him to the hospital, but Hutscher refused to go. He was taken to his home in an ambulance, where his condition last night was pronounced critical. |
