GLASS FACTORIES SHUT DOWN. The Season Closes With to-day Until September 1. To-day the general shut-down in the glass factories all over the country takes place. The establishments will remain closed until about September 1. There are in Muncie six glass factories, employing in the aggregate about seven hundred men. The employees of these factories all receive good wages, and the closing down of the factories will have some effect upon local trade in certain branches, as many of the employees, together with their families, will leave the city during the hot weather. The factories in this city, with the number of men employed, are as follows: Ball Bros., 200 employees; Hemingray's, 125; Over's, 100; Muncie, 125; Maring, Hart & Co., 100; and Port, 75. The hot weather of the past few weeks makes the arrival of the occasion a boon to the overworked glass blowers. About eight weeks will elapse before the blow-pipe is again called into use, and it is to be hoped the blowers will make good use of the periodic idleness. Now is the time to reinvigorate the system; to treat the lungs to liberal drafts of fresh air after they have been shriveled by the year's heat. The summer stop is a wise institution in the glass trade, and it is to be hoped everyone will enjoy it and that the many men employed in the Muncie factories will return to their labors in the fall, benefited and strengthened by the rest and recreation gained during the summer. |
