The Guests Regaled With Tributes

to Democracy.

Yesterday was a great day for the Delaware county Democracy. It was not only the anniversary of the father of our country but also the dedication of the Gray club rooms in the Patterson block. The Gray club is so only in name as about three-fourths of its members are Hill men.

Invitations were extended to leading Democrats of the State several of whom responded by being present. The program as arranged consisted of a reception at the rooms from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Banquet at the Anthony at 9:00 p.m. Toasts — "Welcome address" W. J. Hilligoss; "Our Club." Mayor Brady; "The Democratic Press," G. H. Shanklin; "The Democracy this year," Claude Matthews; "Principles First." Judge J. S. McCabe; "The New Tax Law," A. G. Smith; "Natural Gas," A. C. Silverburg; "To Win or not to Win," A. M. Sweeney; "Democrats as Law Makers," Judge Lotz; "The Political Dude," R. C. Bell; F. D. Halmbaugh was the toastmaster.

The reception was well attended by the local democracy with a good sprinkling of visitors. At the appointed time the party adjourned to the banquet hall in the Anthony, where caterer Hummel had prepared about 125 covers.

When seated about the tables toastmaster Halmbaugh informed the guests that the occasion was a feast of body and soul but before the feast of reason the inner man would be satisfied. The spread consisted of seven courses.

The banquet lasted until a late hour and much forensic eloquence was hurled across the tables after the feast had been disposed of. In addition to the gentlemen from a distance who were down on the program for addresses were: J. H. C. Smith, Bluffton; C. W. Buchanan, Union City; S. R. Moore, Rochester; W. T. Moore, Evansville; Jacob Barrow, Windfall; R. James, Wichita, Kan., and R. Hemingray, Covington, Ky.
