Illustrative of the industry and ambition of members of the potting craft, a local paper cites the following examples: Judge John Rellstab rose from the potter's bench to the bar and has since been City Solicitor, Judge of the City District Court, and finally Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. City Solicitor Charles E. Bird studied while engaged in his trade as decorator. Counsellor Martin P. Delvin was a sanitary presser and found time for study after working hours. Dr. Frank V. Cantwell, one of the most noted surgeons in the United States, accepted his first position in a pottery. Dr. Alton S. Fell was once a clerk in Ott & Brewer's pottery. Many manufacturing potters have also worked their way up from the lower rounds by diligent effort. Notable cases are those of Charles Howell Cook, Frederick A. Duggan, Thomas P. Donoher and Charles A. May.
