GALVESTON RELIEF FUND

Further Public Subscriptions Bring Total to $289,100.63 -Telegram from Miss Barton.

Additional public subscriptions amounting to 3,352.86 for the relief of the people of Galveston were reported yesterday, bringing the total to date up to $289,100.63. Through an error yesterday the total amount subscribed was reported as $295,378.48. The error was due to the fact that the Brooklyn Jockey Club's subscription was included twice -once in the New York Journal's total - and also to a discrepancy of $1,005 in the amount reported from the office of Mayor Van Wyck.

A telegram was received from Mayor Jones of Galveston yesterday acknowledging the receipt of $3,000 from Mayor Van Wyck.

The following telegram was received from Miss Clara Barton, now in Galveston, by William Willard Howard, general manager of the Red Cross Texas Relief Fund, 156 Fifth Avenue:

First shipment of supplies received; assorted and being distributed. The Galveston Central Committee received our co-operation gratefully, inviting us to become part of themselves and direct the distribution. Warehouses established in a large building near railway station. Upper floors being fitted as a temporary asylum for orphans and destitute children generally. There are from six to eight thousand homeless persons in Galveston, many of whom have lost their employment. Money should be immediately forthcoming with which to erect temporary suitable dwellings for these unfortunate people. Large and excellent donations of supplies have been received from the New Orleans Red Cross and Relief Committee and substantial money contributions from Topeka and elsewhere.
