A COOL BURGLAR WAS HE

MRS. HEMINGRAY LAY AWAKE AND

WATCHED A NEGRO ROBBER WORK.

He Had Entered Through an Open Window

In Her Room — Even the Noise

of a Parrot Didn't Frighten

Him Away.

Mrs. R. Hemingray of New York, who is visiting her mother, Mrs. E. E. Westfall, at 1641 Broadway, is a fresh air advocate. She likes to have plenty of fresh air in her room at night and usually leaves a window open. Early this morning she was awakened by a gruff voice asking for her purse. She saw a large negro standing near her bed. A white rag over his eyes served as mask. Without waiting for an answer the negro felt under the pillow of Mrs. Hemingray's bed. Then he took a purse from the bureau. He lighted the gas in the parlor and dumped the contents of the purse on the floor.

There was about $3 in it. He put this in his pocket and continued his search. All this time Mrs. Hemingray was lying in bed, afraid to move. The robber next went into the dining room. A parrot, owned by Mrs. Westfall is kept there. It began to rustle its feathers and make peculiar noises. The robber left the dining room, roamed around the house for a few minutes and then went out of the front door.

As soon as he was gone Mrs. Hemingray ran to the telephone to summon the police. Her mother and sister, who had slept soundly during the negro's visit, awoke and began to make inquiries. There was a great excitement in the house for awhile.

"I don't want any more of those experiences," said Mrs. Hemingray, "to day. The robber did not have a knife or revolver, but I was afraid to move. I thought that he would hit me with his fist. All I could do was to watch him. The robber evidently wanted only money, as there was some jewelry lying around. He did not touch it. The negro acted as if he knew the house. He banged doors and made much noise. It's queer that this did not awaken my mother and sister. He only got $3, but I think that I will sleep with a closed window after this. I don't like these midnight visits."
