(Special Despatch to The Globe.)

Montreal Jan. 16, — An early morning fire caused damage to the extent of [dollar: $30,000] to the Diamond Flint Glass Works to-day. The fire had gained considerable headway before it was discovered, a branch of the factory 300 feet long by 160 wide being pretty well destroyed, the inflammable packing material used for the glassware being responsible for the hard work of the firemen. The heat was so intense that the big stock of glassware melted, which made it impossible for the firemen to get close to handle the blaze. It was an hour and a half before the fire was under control, and nothing is known as to the cause. The firemen prevented the blaze from spreading to the adjoining buildings. Loss mostly covered by Insurance.

St. John N.B., Jan. 16. — (Special.) — Fire which broke out late last night in a tenement house on Brussels street destroyed three houses and rendered nine families homeless. The loss was about $5,000, with little insurance. The night was bitterly cold, and the tenants had a trying time. The fire department fought hard for three hours to prevent the flames from spreading. For the greater part of that time it looked as if that section of the city was doomed.

The loss is covered by insurance, and until the premises are again put in order La Vigle will be printed by the Daily Telegraph.

Orangeville, Jan. 15. — About half-past ten last night fire was discovered in the store of E. C. Clark, general merchant, Broadway, Mr. Clark had sold out, his business to A. J. Smith of Toronto, who was to take possession on Monday. For the past days the store has been closed for stocktaking, and Mr. Clark and his head clerk, Mr. Noble, were in the store fifteen minutes before the fire was discovered by Nightwatchman James Halbert, who turned in the alarm. The brigade responded quickly, and the flames were soon extinguished. The loss is not heavy, and is well insured.
