MARY CROSS WEAKENS

And Takes Oyster Soup After a

Fast of Thirty-Five Days.

At an early hour this morning Mary Cross, the notorious colored woman who made an unsuccessful attempt to shoot Mr. Robert Hemingray several months ago, and has been confined in jail most of the time since, expressed a desire to take some oyster soup after a fast of thirty-five days, during which time she failed to take any nourishment but water, with the exception of yesterday, when she drank a small quantity of sweet cider. The soup, when provided by Jailer Willenbrink this morning was eagerly taken by Mrs. Cross, and seemed to have the effect of strengthening and renewing her spirits. In the last three years she has made six attempts at fasting, each one extending for a longer period than the former. In the fifth case her fast lasted 30 days.
