· · Mr. Ogden, from the special committee appointed to take into consideration the propriety of the erection of a Fire Alarm Telegraph reported that a portion of the committee had visited Philadelphia and New York, and after making diligent inquiries and examining the workings of the various systems, had concluded to recommend the adoption of Gamewell, Kennard & Co.'s system. The committee also offered a resolution providing for the appointment of a committee of three, one from the Select and two from the Common Council, to contract for the erection of a Fire Alarm Telegraph. Mr. Ogden, stated that the committee was unanimously in favor of the system recommended, the price of which would be sixteen thousand dollars, it was the only complete system they had examined, and would comprise thirty iron signal boxes distributed throughout the city, and ten in the engine houses. Eight thousand dollars would be required at the completion of the line, and eight thousand dollars in February, 1867. Mr. McGowan desired to know whether the committee had provided for the expense that would be incurred in the erection of the proposed Fire Alarm Telegraph. Mr. Ogden said there would be no difficulty in regard to the expense. Mr. Turley stated that he had been authorized to state that the various insurance companies would assist in its construction.
