Firemen Battle With
Flood of Molten Glass
When molton glass weighing several tons forced its way out of a tank in which it was kept heated, and flowed into the cellar at the Dominion Glass Works, Dovercourt and Shaw streets, yesterday afternoon at 3.40, it gave the firemen an unusual fire to fight.
The floor was ripped up and water poured on the glass, which sent off clouds of steam. Fireman Bob Phyllis had a narrow escape from a bad burn when some of the molten glass flowed over his rubber boot, burning part of the sole off.
The tank is usually kept heated at 8,000 degrees Fahr. and regulated by electric fans. The power went off and the added heat forced two of the cement blocks of the tank out of place, allowing the liquid glass to escape. The damage was small.
