FLINT GLASS MEN'S

CONVENTION OPENS

Visit From the Grand Secretary

Of English-Irish

National Union.

The convention of the American Flint Glassworkers of the United States opened at the Odd Fellows' Temple yesterday morning. There were 275 delegates present from unions throughout the country and some from Canada. The National President, T. W. Rowe, made a short address welcoming the delegates and referring to the present conditions in the glass industry and among the workers.

The business of the morning was limited to appointing a committee of fifty to examine credentials of delegates. Henry Leiner, of Wheeling, is its Chairman. The committee was given till this morning to report. The delegates spent the day in seeing the city and suburbs.

An event of the meeting here will be the visit of Grand Secretary J. J. Rudge, of the Glassworkers' National Union of Great Britain and Ireland. He is now on the ocean, coming to pay a fraternal visit and to tell the workers here of conditions in England and Ireland. He is expected to reach Cincinnati next Monday. His being here will be a sort of reciprocity, as last year President Rowe made a trip through Belgium, France, Ireland, and England, and was entertained by the unions of those countries.

Considerable interest is felt in the coming of the Executive Committee of the Glass Manufacturers' Association, which will be here tomorrow to confer with the delegates on wages and work hours and other matters concerning both employers and the workers. There seems to be good feeling on both sides, and no trouble is expected in arranging agreements for the next year.
