GUILTY GLASS PLANT MANAGER
BLAMES FIRE ON CIRCUMSTANCES.
Medicine Hat, Canada, Feb. 6. — Manager George Lydiatt, of the Dominion Glass Co.'s plant at Redcliff, who was recently fined for violations of the child labor law, pleaded extenuating circumstances. The information was by E. E. Roper, of the Alberta Federation of Labor, and concerned three children. Mr. Lydiatt explained that, while pleading guilty, he felt certain that extenuating circumstances should be considered. He felt that a canvass of the labor unions would establish the fact that the management used due diligence in carrying out all laws. They had not been dishonest and had made no attempt to conceal their employment of children, who were employed only temporarily. The fathers of two of them were members of the unions and one was a delegate to the convention. One mother had brought her daughter to the factory herself. The minimum wage had never been violated. Mr. Lydiatt felt that the present case was a violation of the letter rather than the spirit of the law.
