FIRE AT AMERICAN

PORCELAIN WORKS

Overhead Kiln Causes a Loss of

About $200 — Firemen Hindered

by Wrong Directions

An overheated kiln at the American Porcelain Works, on Philemon street, caused a fire which did about $200 worth of damage, between 12 and 1 o'clock this morning. A telephone call received at fire headquarters at 12:45 stated that the blaze was at the Skillman Hardware Company's plant, which was some little distance from its true location. Assistant Chief Allen responded with steamers 1 and 5, truck 1, and chemical 1, and were soon on the scene.

The watchman at the hardware works knew nothing of the fire, and several minutes were lost before it was located. Fortunately the flames had not spread beyond the kiln house, and although that was burning fiercely, the department was soon master of the situation.

The residents of nearby houses were more or less alarmed and many ran from their houses in a half clad condition.
