THE CITY. · · WE take pleasure in reproducing the following from the Danville, (Ky.) Advocate. Hon. Claude Matthews is the son of our genial and popular fellow citizen, Major T. A. Matthews, and we fully endorse what the Advocate and Era say of him. The only return we ask is the privilege of nominating, when he becomes Governor, a friend for the position of Major General on his staff. We are glad to reproduce from the Montezuma (Ind.) Era, the following allusion to a gentleman who is well-known in our city, a graduate of Centre College, and a prominent citizen of Indiana. FOR GOVERNOR — We present to the Democracy of Indiana the name of Hon. Claude Matthews, as being worthy the consideration of that honorable body as a candidate for the Governorship. Mr. Matthews has the clear, decisive mind and genial personal qualities which insure popularity. He is an able scholar and accomplished gentleman, and is mentally and physically capable of making an exhaustive campaign. He is an agriculturist, and is therefore closely identified with the most prominent industry of our State. In 1876 he was elected to the Legislature from Vermillion county, not-withstanding the fact that the Republicans had an overwhelming majority in the county. He filled the position in a manner which reflected credit to himself and gave entire satisfaction to the people. He is undoubtedly the choice of the masses and should receive the nomination; he would make a lively campaign, and reflect credit upon the party should he be chosen for their candidate. |
