THE San Francisco Journal of Commerce of March 25th contained a number of interviews with representative business men concerning the state of trade on the coast, from which we select the following: Mr. C. Newman of San Francisco and Pacific Glass Works, being interviewed, replied to a reporter as follows: "How does your trade compare with last year?" "About the same." "What are the prospects of the trade for your line this year?" "Very good." "Why?" "Because a better feeling prevails and a greater demand is being experienced in the eastern states. This will prevent them from sending any surplus out to this market and we can sell them our products better." "What number of men and boys do you give employment to?" "We average 100; all white labor." "Have you advanced your prices?" "Yes, about ten per cent." "Why this advance?" "Well, sir, the raw material — chemicals — such as soda ash, have gone up and hence we must obtain better prices." "How can trade be developed here in San Francisco?" "The merchant should take a pride in favoring home products, as factories are the life and soul of any state, and should be encouraged by people calling for a home manufactured article."
