BLOWER SYSTEMS TOPIC OF INTERESTING BOOK

WIDESPREAD use of automatic machinery in the glass industry has increase the attention given to blowing and ventilating systems. The data contained in the illustrated book just issued by the Kirk & Blum Mfg. Co., of Cincinnati, Ohio, on "Kirk & Blum Blower Systems," therefore, should be of interest to glass manufacturers.

Air is and can be used not only in operating blowing machinery and in ventilating but also in the handling of light materials. In the box factory, too, a dust collecting system will not only reduce hazards but also add to the efficiency of workers.

The booklet on "Kirk & Blum Blower Systems" not only describes various systems but shows numerous installations in all kinds of factories throughout the country. The largest blower installation in the world, in the Ford Motor Co. plant at Iron Mountain, Mich., is Kirk & Blum installation.

It is urged that in installing blower systems for whatever purpose that all facts be obtained. "It may be said," says the booklet, "that in every case the efficiency of any blower system is definitely measured by the amount of necessary suction produced in proportion to the power demand. The first cost is in no way a measure of the comparative economy of blower equipment." Kirk & Blum were the leaders in writing into contracts a definite guarantee of maximum power demand and minimum suction — the factors that determine the real cost of any system.

Kirk & Blum have been erecting blower systems for 20 years and their organization, both in shop and engineering, has increased with the years. A fundamental policy is to treat the design and installation of each system as a separate engineering problem. Distinctive features of Kirk & Blum equipment include a direct-current fitting which saves power and increases volume and the heavy, one-piece machine-made elbow. These and other features are described in the booklet.

Among glass factories using Kirk & Blum systems for various purposes are the Winslow Glass Co., Columbus; Ford Motor Co., River Rouge; Hemingray Glass Co., Muncie; Athens Glass Co., Morgantown; Nivison-Weiskopf Co., Reading, O.; Ball Bros. Co., Muncie, and Belmont Tumbler Co., Bellaire, Ohio.

Manufacturers of refractories also are among users of Kirk & Blum systems as well as many sash and door makers.

In the glass industry, Kirk & Blum-systems are used not only to supply blowing power to machines and to cool molds and operators, but also to blow cool air against the outer walls of tanks, to carry dust and shavings from box plants and to convey light materials.

In addition to the illustrations and descriptions of recent blower installations, the Kirk & Blum book also contains a very thorough discussion of the "fundamentals of blower engineering." The book has been prepared with apparent great care and no expense has been spared to make it interesting. The Kirk & Blum Mfg. Co. will be glad to send the book to any who are interested. The company should be addressed at 2846 Spring Grove avenue, Cincinnati.
