Leading Manufacturers of Glassware

of 35 Years Ago

SEVERAL veterans of the flint glass trade met accidentally last week in Pittsburgh and began discussing the "good old days" of 35 years and more ago. The chronicler was permitted to hear the discussion of this factory and that town and gained much interesting, romantic and anecdotal information of the glassware trade and its leading manufacturers in the early 'nineties of the last century.

In order to substantiate some company names and other facts, a glass industry directory of 35 years ago was consulted. The facts disclosed were most interesting and it was felt that many veterans of glassware — buyers and salesmen as well as manufacturers — might enjoy reading over again the names of the companies which were making ware — and history — in 1892 and thereabouts.

Thirty-five years ago factories still were active that today are looked upon as producers of Early American ware. Few of the factores [sic] factories continue under the same or similar names today while most of those producing glassware 35 years ago are gone from the activities of production. Many of the towns which boasted quite sizable and active glassware factories in 1892 today no longer are known in the glass industry.

May we not recall to the veterans of the glassware trade pleasant memories of the old days by the re-naming of the factories of 35 years ago! We hope so and they are appended with notation as to their relation to the present day:

The flint glass, or glassware, manufacturing of 1892 was centered in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York.
