WHITALL TATUM CO. MAKING CONTAINERS

FOR SHIPMENT OF OYSTERS

The Whitall Tatum Co., of Millville, N. J., have received an order for half pint glass containers to be used in the shipment of oysters. The jars are being made at the South Millville plant of the company for the Fogg-Stowman Co., of Port Norris, N. J.

The use of glass containers is new in the shipment of oysters, but it is possible that all the Port Norris concerns will be adopting this method within the next few months.

The Fogg-Stowman Co., pioneers of the idea of shipping oysters in glass containers, are letting the world in on their idea, and the news has been broadcast from New Jersey radio stations. Shipments are made in refrigerator cars, and people hundreds of miles distant from the oyster center are able to obtain the delicious bivalves containing the same strength and flavor as though they had just left the shell.

For years oysters have been shipped from the shipping houses along the wharves at Bivalve in the shell, and the advantage of the new plan is admitted. Since the establishment of the shucking houses at Port Norris and Bivalve tin containers have been used, but the purchaser does not obtain the same idea of what he is buying that he does when he glances into a glass jar and can see the oysters, all of them directly before his eyes.

The oystermen are now making use of the slogan "See What You Buy; Buy in Glass," adopted by the Glass Container Association.
