CORNING GLASS WORKS TO ERECT

NEW POT AND CLAY PLANT

Work was to start this week on erection of a new pot and clay manufacturing plant at the Corning Glass Works, Corning, N. Y. The building is to be erected to allow expansion of the present "A" factory of the Corning Works, where the pot and clay manufacturing is done at present. It is understood that congestion in this department, where Pyrex is manufactured, is responsible for the decision to erect the new unit. It is expected that the plant will ze [sic] be ready for occupancy on June 1.

The construction will consist of erection of two new buildings and the remodeling of the present structure on the location. One of these will be a one-story pot drying building of special tile construction, probably the only one of its type in the world. The building will be especially insulated for the drying process. The other plants will be used for processing the clay of which 300 different shapes are made for use in various departments of glass manufacture at present. Refractory mixtures which are products of Corning Glass Works are practically impossible in any other plant, officials of the company state, because of the difficulty in processing, which has been overcome by the Corning organization.

The building, the product and the materials used are all the result of work of Corning Glass engineers. The new buildings will be erected west of the present structure and will cover approximately 25,100 square feet of floor space. Floor space in the plant to be remodeled will be about 35,200 square feet. One kiln will be built at present and will replace the last of the old brick stacks in the existing pot and clay plant.
