[Trade Journal] Publication: American Flint Toledo, OH, United States |
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. By J. M. Price
Greetings to the trade. From what I can learn, all the members of Local Union No. 141 are glad to welcome back the American Flint. We out here sure missed the little "mag" when it was forced to suspend, and now, with its return, let us hope that each Local Union will take enough interest in it and give us the news. There has been plenty happened since we had out last issue, so there should be some interesting letters from our press secretaries, so let us give the Flint a great big hand, and fill its pages with news from the rank and file. Conditions are no worse here than anywhere else, I suppose. We do have the benefit of pleasant winters, and that helps some, for you can stick to B.V.D.s and forget about red flannels. There has been quite an increase in our membership since the Technical Glass Co. started making punch and stem ware. The mould makers have been working very good for some time but I have been informed that the work has slacked down. The Long Beach Co., which operated in Long Beach for a good many years, has moved to 35th and Santa Fe Ave. in Vernon, where they have built one of the finest factories on the coast. The depression does not seem to have bothered this company very much. There are five factories here that are machine factories. Owens-Illinois has two, the Maywood Co., Latchfords, and the Long Beach Co., which now has a new name, and I will furnish that name some time again as I cannot remember it now. The McLaughlin Glass Company makes machine made ware and also a line of flint ware. The Crystalite Company in Glendale is a fling factory, also the Forger plant. Sam Woods and his partner, Leonard, are operating a mould shop. I will give the trade more information on all these factories later. Here are some Who's Who and What: Fred Glassen and Joe Bloomgreen are at the Crystalite. Ralph Brown, our young and efficient President, and Executive Officer on the Coast, has charge of the mould shop. Scott Littleton and his son George are at McLaughlon [sic] McLaughlin. Scott can still swing down on that old side lever. Jim Schulick (maybe I had better say James) is blowing shams at the Tech. James has taken unto himself a wife since he came back out here. Humphrey, a lad who came out here to gather for Mr. Schulick, also joined the love, honor and obey lodge, so look out, you single lads, for if the climate does not get you, the gals will. I guess there will be no more trips across the desert for John Schwartz as he has moved his family out here. Just closed a race meet here, the first horse racing here in 25 years, Some of our members are pretty fair at picking the winners. Plenty of baseball in sight with Pittsburgh, Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs in training here, so it begins to look like another hard winter is over. Members of Local Union No. 141, bring in the news and I will send it in to the Flint. I have overlooked some of you this time, but give me time and I will catch up with you, for I am a little rusty, and when some one gives you something for nothing, just feel for the string. |
